Safari-themed gala fundraiser helps H.E.L.P.

There was a bevy of attractive women in zebra-striped skirts and leopard-skinned jackets — and even a few gents wearing safari hats with their tuxes — at Moonlight on the Serengeti, a recent benefit for HELP (Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corp.) at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Those in costume had adhered to the invitation’s dress code: “Safari attire admired, but not required.”

When De De Hicks became president and CEO of the Volunteer Center, it had an operating budget of $137,000. Today, 27 years later, it has a $2 million budget and serves many low-income school children in the South Bay through programs like Food for Kids and Operation Teddy Bear. The Volunteer Center serves as the “hub” for volunteer activities for 600 nonprofit organizations in 43 cities.

It was a gathering fit for the Queen of England — although she was unable attend H.E.L.P.’s Celebrate Summer event last Friday. She did send a photograph, however, signed, “Love, Liz,” for H.E.L.P.’s “royal” sponsor, Ralph Scriba.

Founded 15 years ago by Ed and Pat Long, Healthcare and Elder Law Programs has become an invaluable resource for senior citizens and their families and caregivers in the South Bay and Peninsula area.

H.E.L.P.’s mission has been to empower seniors, Britt Huff, the new executive director, said, “so they can live their lives with security.”

The stars appeared to be in full alignment during a recent benefit for Healthcare and Elder Law Programs (H.E.L.P.), at the elegant Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. The nonprofit was celebrating its 15th anniversary with a dinner and live and silent auctions, chaired by Sharon Ryan, to commence the organization's $250,000 capital campaign.
